Abstract

  • Hyper IgE syndrome (HIES) should be considered when a patient presents with elevated IgE levels, eczema, recurrent skin abscesses and pneumonia

  • DOCK8 deficiency should be considered in any patient with immunodeficiency and a history of atopy (i.e. allergic rhinitis, food allergies, asthma) and elevated IgE

  • Patients with DOCK8 deficiency are at increased risk of malignancy secondary to cutaneous viral infections. This is due to susceptibility of DOCK8-deficient T and NK cells to cytothripsis during migration through collagen-dense tissues

  • Definitive cure is hematopoietic stem cell transplantation which leads to immune reconstitution and reversal of clinical phenotypes
