Initial Diagnosis of Neutropenia and Later Crohn’s Disease

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) can initially present with inflammatory bowel disease and progress to a picture of humoral immunodeficiency

  • The laboratory diagnosis of CVID requires at least two classes of antibodies to be subnormal, including IgG, and most typically IgG and IgA

  • Antibody analyses should also indicate failure to mount good post-vaccination responses

  • Immunodeficiency and autoimmunity are not the opposites as previously though, but are now know to share multiple genes, as a consequence, autoimmunity may appear before symptoms of immunodeficiency
