Abstract
Effective team functioning and performance relies to a large extent on having a shared identity across team members. This shared identity usually is based on a shared mission and goals and is greatly facilitated by the development of a shared mental model of the research endeavor. In the pages that follow, we will outline the successful development of a shared mental model in one center of a transdisciplinary team-based initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health and highlight the value of the model to the development and implementation of the research initiative.
