Abstract

Obesity is a major risk factor for the development of incident asthma and also complicates the disease in those with pre-existing asthma who become obese. Obese patients tend to suffer from poorly controlled asthma, which responds poorly to standard medications. This chapter reviews what is known about the pathogenesis of asthma in obese patients and discusses how asthma management needs to be customized for this patient population. Co-morbidities such as depression and obstructive sleep apnea may significantly complicate the disease. Successful management should include consideration of changed physiology and altered response to medications, management of co-morbidities, and interventions to promote diet and lifestyle change.
