Abstract

International justice can be viewed as a stage of social development at the macro level with the participation of states rather than individuals. Those states enjoy their sovereign power. They make their independent decisions to join international organizations, to sign certain international treaties. Their decisions should be based on the recognition that the objectives of an international treaty or organization are in the interests of their members; in other words, by making their decisions the states confirm common interests and common values pursued by the organisation.

Dmitry Dedov is judge at the European Court of Human Rights elected in respect of the Russian Federation.
