Abstract
In this chapter, the basic methodological tenets of the study of pathogenic bacteria are discussed. This includes the analysis of the growth, properties, and behavior of bacteria, as well as the tools and methods used to assess pathogenesis in vitro (host cells) and in vivo (animal models). The basic definition of virulence is introduced, and model systems that faithfully recapitulate infection, both present and those likely to be a part of the future, are highlighted. The reader will be armed with the tools of microbiology so as to frame the origins of the knowledge presented in forthcoming chapters.
