Abstract
Cam mechanisms can be designed and simulated with the help of different software tools. However, these are not always easy to use, and often have a high processing time. The Institute of Mechanism Theory, Machine Dynamics and Robotics of RWTH Aachen University has been developing a new software to design planar mechanisms. This software lets users build, adjust and visualize their own mechanism in real time. As the constructible mechanisms are not limited to state of the art structures, but rather the inventiveness of the user, complex structures might appear. One of the possible consequences of such complex structures can be cams or followers not following a purely translating or rotating movement, but rather a mix of both. This paper presents a new analytic method using complex numbers for analysing the position, velocity and acceleration of a flat face or a roller follower when the cam or follower do not have a purely translating or rotating movement.
