Abstract

Analysis of storm activity over the marshland is carried out. The overall picture of storm activity in the Leningrad Region for 2017 in the form of distribution density of lightning discharges both for all period and for separate days is considered. It is noted that in a large part of all cases, the thunderstorm centers are formed directly over the swamp. In the cases of storm centers, which arose out of and passed through the swamp, the increase in lightning flashes intensity was observed.

May 25, 2017 (see Fig. 7). The thunderstorm over the object started at 14:00, smoothly displaced to the east to the Lake Ladoga and finished at 16:00. Speed of movement is about 10 km/h. The maximum intensity is 28 discharges per hour.

May 28–29, 2017 (see Fig. 8). The thunderstorm started in 120 km to the northeast from the swamp at 21:40, developed in the southeast direction, moved to Lake Ladoga and finished to the south of its center at 00:30. This thunderstorm did not pass through the swamp. The movement speed of the storm center is about 70 km/h. The maximum intensity is 47 discharges per hour. Other storm center arose in 150 km to the southwest from the swamp at 23:00, moved in east direction and finished at 1:00. Speed of movement is 50 km/h. The maximum intensity is 31 discharges per hour. This storm center passed out the swamp.

June 21, 2017 (see Fig. 9). The thunderstorm has a multicell character. The first center started in 50 km to the north of the swamp at 11:00 and faded at 12:00 with the maximum intensity of 47 discharges per hour. At 12:00 there were two more centers. One was over the swamp, moved in the southern direction and faded at 14:30. Movement speed is about 35 km/h, the maximum intensity 43 is discharges per hour. Another was formed in the form of a tape in 40 km to the northwest. It moved in parallel with the first one and faded at 14:00. Movement speed is about 30 km/h, the maximum intensity 34 is discharges per hour.

July 19, 2017 (see Fig. 10). The storm center was created at 6:20 over the swamp, slowly moved in east direction and ceased to exist on the southern coast of Lake Ladoga at 10:00. Movement speed is about 40 km/h, the maximum intensity is 65 discharges per hour.

August 17, 2017. The intensive storm center was created in 130 km to the southwest of the swamp at 14:00, reached the swamp at 15:20, having covered with one part the swamp, another passed out (Fig. 11).

The maximum intensity before the swamp is 303 discharges per hour. That part which covered the swamp crossed Lake Ladoga at 18:30 and finished in 30 km to the east of the coast at 20:20 with the maximum intensity of 411 discharges per hour. That part which did not touch the swamp faded. At the same time at 19:00 the new storm center in 40 km to the northwest from the swamp was formed and went along the coast of Lake Ladoga to the north. The maximum intensity was 165 discharges per hour. Movement speeds of the both centers were about 35 km/h.

August 23, 2017 (see Fig. 12).

The thunderstorm started in the center of Lake Ladoga at 15:40 and stayed in the same place till 17:30. At this time at 16:30 in 10 km to the north from the swamp the storm center was formed and began to move slowly in the northern direction. At 17:10 one more storm center was formed in a northern part of the swamp and went to the north too. As a result all these centers, having mixed up, reached a northern part of Lake Ladoga at 19:20, and ceased to exist at 21:00. Average speed of movement of this conglomeration was about 40 km/h. The maximum intensity is 148 discharges per hour. September 12, 2017. The thunderstorm started in 300 km to the southwest from the swamp, moved in the northeast direction, passed in 100 km to the north and finished at 11:00 on the northern coast of Lake Ladoga. The second thunderstorm in the same day has a frontal type and also passed out the swamp which several centers arose in 50 km to the east from it at 13:00. It moved out of swamp in east direction with a speed of about 40 km/h. Both thunderstorms passed out the swamp (Figs. 13, 14 and 15).
