Abstract

How did we get into this mess? Between the Euro-zone, the refugee crisis, and Brexit, the EU has been faced with its three most existential crises in rapid succession. But a more fundamental problem underlies all these crises—and that is the problem of how to make collective decisions when Member States disagree on the appropriate answer. The traditional solution to this problem has led to the emergence of strong Eurosceptic narratives, and an overall disillusionment with the European project and national politics alike. But why is that? And what can we learn from this experience about how we ‘do’ integration?
