Abstract
The evolution of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has spurred advances in complex liver surgery. Refinements in living donor liver surgery along with a better understanding of the liver anatomy and live donor liver volumetry have been applied to resective hepatic surgery, improving outcomes after major liver resection. Likewise, advances in resective hepatic surgery has led to both the split-liver technique and LDLT. The overall result has been the development of innovative techniques, such as two-stage hepatectomy, and the association of liver partition and portal vein ligation, combining aspects of liver resection surgery and partial graft transplantation.
This chapter reviews the surgical and clinical advances in liver surgery and LDLT, focusing on developments worldwide and in Italy, donor and recipient outcomes, and prospects for the further expansion and application of these complex surgical procedures.
