Abstract

Solid organ transplant recipients may undergo successful surgery for procedures unrelated to their transplant. The perioperative medicine consultant should be aware of the unique aspects of care of these patients, including taking a thorough transplant history, assessing the transplanted organ, understanding and planning for the risks of immunosuppression and corticosteroid use, and managing immunosuppressant medications in patients with fluctuating enteral intake. Working with the transplant specialist is recommended for complex surgical cases.
