Abstract
Despite the widespread use of medical therapy in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), many patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease will require intra-abdominal surgery. Patients with IBD who undergo surgery are at risk for complications including infection, anastomotic breakdown, thrombosis, and poor wound healing. Perioperative consultants and surgeons should attempt to mitigate risk by optimizing perioperative medications, nutrition, and close monitoring for infection.
