Abstract
The prevalence of genitourinary pathology increases with age in women and men contributing to increased healthcare utilization, physical and psychological morbidity, and poor quality of life. Geriatric syndromes such as dementia, delirium, frailty, and falls further complicate the diagnosis and management of genitourinary pathology in older adults. Urinary symptoms in older adults may indicate an underlying structural, infectious, or systemic illness with unique presentations, outcomes, and management strategies. Bladder catheterization is often used to treat urinary symptoms in a variety of care settings, and understanding catheter selection, catheterization techniques, and potential complications enables effective management of urinary symptoms in elderly patients.
