Late-Life Insomnia

Geriatric Practice

Abstract

Older adults experience many physical and health-related changes, including normative changes in sleep patterns characterized by greater fragility of sleep and a tendency toward “lightening” of sleep. This altered sleep patterning combined with an accumulation of other age-related changes (such as illness, polypharmacy, institutionalization, and social role transitions) increases the likelihood of incident sleep complaints and chronic insomnia during older adulthood. This chapter will provide an overview of the foundational research literature on late-life insomnia integrated with up-to-date data on the prevalence and clinical presentation of insomnia symptoms among older adults. Guidelines for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of late-life insomnia will also be summarized.
