Abstract
The development of reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) began in the 1970s, but it was not until the early 2000s that its use became widespread. The primary indications for use, where the best improvements in outcomes have been demonstrated, are for patients suffering with rotator cuff arthropathy. As surgeons have become more familiar with the technique of RSA, the indications for use have expanded to include inflammatory arthritis, acute proximal humerus fractures, revision surgery, resolution of complications following surgery, shoulder dysplasias, glenohumeral osteoarthritis with severe glenoid bone loss, and chronic glenohumeral dislocations.
However, some contraindications should be taken into consideration when planning RSA, in particular the requirement of a functioning deltoid and the age of the patient.
