Abstract
This chapter explores current research demonstrating the deadly psychological, physiologic, and physical impact of chronic stress from conditions like racism. The meaning of culture (attached to a set of experiences, underlying assumptions , and core beliefs) is critically examined and the need to place it (culture ) in context is highlighted. Cultural responsivity is used heavily in the academic literature as a euphemism and antidote for racism, discrimination, prejudice, and preconceived notions. According to E. Schein’s model on organizational culture change , culture shift happens when core beliefs, bias, and underlying assumptions are intentionally addressed. The culture of systems (which are intimately attached to the culture of people) must be thoughtfully provoked and challenged to get to the change we seek.
