Abstract
The current practice environment and diversity of demands in academic medicine requires more in the way of leadership from surgeons than at any time previously. However, leadership is typically taught as a component of the hidden curriculum during training, leaving young surgeons at a disadvantage when they are thrust into positions of leadership. A variety of short- and long-term leadership courses are available for surgeon-leaders at all stages of their careers, allowing progressive skill development appropriate to changing roles and environments. While this chapter is in no way an exhaustive catalog of courses in leadership development, it highlights some time-tested programs as well as providing guidance for potential resources.
