Abstract
Surgical education is part of the core mission of any department of surgery. The traditional view of surgical education largely focused on teaching medical students and residents, however the field has evolved and there is now increasing focus on continuous professional development throughout all stages of a surgical career. Historically leadership in surgical education was thought of as a stepping stone to other leadership positions within the department and training in education or teaching was not required. Currently, the field has evolved to recognize the expertise and knowledge that is necessary to support the educational mission of our profession.
