Abstract

Bore shape could be cylindrical such as for a clarinet, or conical such as for oboes, bassoons and saxophones. The bore shape and the tone holes distribution are specific to each type of woodwind instrument and determine the resonance frequencies of a woodwind instruments. The corresponding frequency above which sound waves can propagate through the lattice of the open holes is called the cutoff frequency. An objective comparison of the effects of bores of various instruments can be achieved experimentally by studding the variation of transfer impedance versus frequency. The sound field in the proximity of the tone holes of woodwind musical instruments is crucial for their behavior.
