Abstract

Lymphoedema is a chronic progressive disease caused by the accumulation of lymph in the interstitial space, which leads to subcutaneous swelling. Since lymph fluid is rich in proteins, it can generate chronic inflammation, proliferation and eventually fibrosclerosis of the affected tissue. The reason for this lymphostatic disease is a mechanical failure due to malfunctioning lymph formation, lymph transport, or both. The cause for this insufficiency can be an organic dysfunction such as alymphoplasia, hyper−/hypoplasia or atresia of the lymphatic vessels, lymphangitis, thrombosis or lymphadenopathy after lymphadenectomy as well as functional problems such as valve insufficiency, vessel wall insufficiency, arrhythmia of vessel pulsation, lymphangiospasm or lymphangioparalysis [1].
