Abstract
Extended and thorough research has taken place over several years to investigate the possible involvement of popliteal lymph nodes in patients, who have developed metastatic cutaneous melanoma (CM) or non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) of the distal part of the lower extremities. The need for dissection of the affected popliteal lymph nodes has also been investigated thoroughly throughout the years. The anatomical features of popliteal lymph nodes, along with their role in metastatic CM and in NMSC of the leg and the parameters involved in their dissection, constitute the subject of this section.
