Abstract

Due to the similar lattice constants of graphene and hBN, a moiré superlattice is formed when the two are crystallographically aligned. Graphene aligned to bulk hBN exhibits out-of-plane deformations or kinks that relieve in plane strain created by a stretching of the graphene lattice to fit the potential of the underlying hBN. Investigations into their stability and evolution under applied mechanical strain are the main focus of this thesis.
