Abstract

The role of trade in post-crisis periods is widely acclaimed. Exporting is determinant for the recovery of countries that have experienced an economic downturn, enhancing productivity and growth and increasing the level of employment. Against this backdrop, the purpose of this study is to advance our understanding on the impact of domestic institutional quality on firms’ decision to export. To test this relationship, we frame our study in Greece and deploy perceptual, multi-item measures of three governance constructs that may challenge institutional isomorphism (severity of corruption, bureaucratic efficiency and regulatory complexity). On the basis of a logistic regression analysis, we find that the joint interactions of institutional weaknesses make firms reluctant to initiate internationalization activity. Thus, home institutional susceptibility seems to hinder export activity.
