Abstract

Given the assortment of interpretations of trivialization, constraining our capacity to jointly engage and effectively tackle it, the chapter first provides a useful conceptualization of the term. A discussion of two salient examples illustrating trivialization in action follows. The first is the familiar issue of free trade, often presented in the most reductive manner rather than afforded the nuanced treatment such a complex topic requires. The second is a case study of the US health care system and its landmark, if deeply contested, reforms enacted to help address the costs, coverage, and quality issues. The discussion of key characteristics, outcomes, and solutions hopes to illustrate that the fundamentals needed to engage in a reasoned conversation cannot be condensed into a few sentences, as is alas customary.
