Abstract

Central nervous system (CNS) tumor has a high incidence during childhood and represents the second most common neoplasm in the pediatric population, only behind leukemias that are the most frequent tumors in children under 15 years old. The most frequent CNS tumors in the pediatric population are midline neoplasms (pontine and hypothalamic gliomas and craniopharyngiomas), posterior fossa tumors, and embrionary tumors. Approximately, 50–60% of these tumors have their initial growth in the posterior fossa. Many of the signs and symptoms are present in common pathologies like gastroenteritis, migraine, and behavioral disorders and can cause misdiagnoses. We describe the most common pediatric tumors and their treatment and prognosis.
