Abstract

Hydrocephalus is a neurological condition which constitutes the disturbance of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics, causing an abnormal accumulation inside of the brain interconnected cavities, which we call ventricles. Hydrocephalus is one of the most common neurological sequelae following insult to the central nervous system. It can be congenital or acquired; it also can affect the pediatric population, adults, and the most elderly ones. This neurological condition can have a great prognosis if treated, but it also can be life-threatening if mistreated or undiagnosed. It is one of the reasons why every general physician should know about the behavior of this disease, the symptoms, and how and when to treat it. In this chapter, we will review the general aspects of hydrocephalus, its epidemiology, types, diagnosis, brain imaging, and treatment.
