Abstract

O’Melia concludes her examination of the fundamental shift that occurred within Saturday Morning by the integration of Japanese popular media after 1993, by exploring its various legacies on current American children’s media. First, she examines Cartoon Network’s “Toonami” block’s history and interaction with Saturday Morning and posits how it is staged to become Saturday Morning’s spiritual successor for the younger generations of Americans. She then asserts that the current increase in complex narratives for children emerged from Saturday Morning gradually making it desirable to its young audience. Finally, she highlights the effects Japanese popular media has made on modern comedic cartoons and then concludes with her final thoughts on the lasting legacy of the bygone institution of Saturday Morning.
