Perioperative Challenges During Diagnostic and Perioperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Abstract

Sedation or general anaesthesia is often required for the neurologically injured patients undergoing MRI scanning. The goal is to improve patient compliance and ensure immobility, thereby helping acquisition of acceptable quality of images. The existence of strong magnetic field imposes specific challenges during diagnostic and intraoperative MRI. Adherence to safety measures prevents risk of injury to patient and involved personnel. The anaesthesiologist should be aware of safety mechanisms of MRI suite and the equipments utilised during the process. This chapter describes all the procedural concerns and management thereof in neurological patients who need sedatives and anaesthetics to undergo the diagnostic and perioperative MRI procedures.
