Abstract

Brown introduces the concept of encounter as a central moment in hermeneutic interpretation. Two issues regarding the encounter are established. Firstly, the encounter is articulated as an existential epistemological concept which prioritises knowledge gained through external experiences rather than appreciation of eternal ‘truths’. Subsequently, Brown argues this allows the encounter to approach issues as they manifest within worldly situations as apposed to seeking an external objective vantage point outside of them. Secondly, Brown locates the encounter’s central position within the hermeneutic circle of understanding. He theorises how, from these existential experiences, one is able to come to an understanding of both self and world. The implications of this for interpreting the situation of Political Obligational are related to throughout.
