Abstract
The agenda of this book is to examine the subjective perspective of citizens on European politics during a period of troubled times for the EU and its member states. This chapter begins describing the European crises in its plural form since political elites and public discourses subsumed a vast number of economic, political, and societal developments after 2007 under the term “crisis”. However, the inherent extraordinary nature of the term suggests identifying the relevant political attitudes that are substantially linked to the EU on the one hand and to narrow down the European crises to those phenomena that have been both truly extraordinary and at least predominantly of a genuine European scope on the other hand. Both tasks are ambitious on their own but must be dealt with to develop a sound research agenda.
