Modern Microtia Reconstruction

Abstract

Bilateral microtia is sufficiently different from unilateral microtia that it should not be seen as two unilateral microtias in the same patient. The most important difference is the presence of a bilateral conductive hearing loss, which must be treated at a young age with a bone conductive hearing device to provide useable hearing. Early hearing is critically important for a child’s speech and language development. In this chapter we will discuss the various differences between unilateral and bilateral microtia and how these differences affect the surgical approach.
