Abstract

Remote Sensing & GIS is increasingly being used worldwide within Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA); however, the extent has not been well practiced, therefore not well appreciated in the scientific fraternity. In this case study I have decided to engage myself with consultations from relevant professionals to identify suitable site for a mega dam to supply water to the residence within this area. The objective of this study is to put into practice the scientific techniques of E.I.A process on the identification of the ideal site for the dam. Detailed information regarding the topography, drainage network, Soil, Demographic, Land use land cover, Climate (rainfall), and geological set up of the area for proper siting plan for water conservation measures will be evaluated. Study area is in Nakuru County within Kenya Rift Valley and lays about 30 km north of its capital having a population of 35,949 as per 2009 census (KNBS). Annual rainfall 1012 mm, soil developed from colluvial materials derived from sedimentary rocks in the Rift valley. Mixed farming is the economic activity. County map will be sourced Scanning, georeferencing, and digitizing done. Excel files and satellite images will be acquired from relevant bodies internet (USGS) creating a geodatabase for editing and analyzing. The Spatial analysis will aim at informing the location of suitable site for the Mega-Dam.
