Abstract
Raising public awareness and stimulating support for measures to achieve SFM is essential and the approach adopted will differ from country to country because of differences in the target audiences. Most developed countries already have various campaigns run by conservation NGOs, but in developing countries Community Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) campaigns are shown to be effective. For developing countries that are currently losing their forests, these need careful planning, involvement of indigenous peoples, and a budget estimated at US$ 159–200 million to be sustained for at least 5 years. Finally a prestigious annual prize (comparable to a Nobel Prize) for the greatest progress towards achieving sustainable forest management, perhaps to be sponsored by the “UN Forum on Forests” is recommended.
