Abstract
Hanguk hip hop—or Korean hip hop—from its conception, is largely removed from the historical, sociocultural, and economic conditions in which American hip hop was born. At the same time, Korean hip hop is separated from other styles of popular music, most notably K-pop. The first chapter historicizes Hanguk hip hop by locating the local, global, and (trans)national flows of cultural exchange between America and South Korea and outlining the conditions that underlie the production, circulation, and consumption of Korean hip hop. Through a critical examination of these two planes, the chapter unpacks the development of hip hop in Korea.
