Nutritional Management of Calcium Stones

Abstract

Calcium-containing stones are the most common type of kidney stones. The historic record documents attempts at dietary intervention for millennia. The prevalence of stone disease is increasing, and diet is often a contributing factor. Nutrition therapy for risk modification is promising, but there are many research gaps due to the complexities of conducting high-quality clinical trials. The American Urological Association (AUA) published guideline statements based on graded evidence and expert opinion in 2014 for medical management of kidney stones, and these statements provide a framework for nutrition therapy. Medical and nutrition therapies provide separate yet synergistic benefit, and a coordinated approach best supports the patient for effective treatment of calcium stone disease and is valuable for preventing recurrence.
