Abstract

Uric acid kidney stones represent approximately 5–10% of all kidney stones. There is a significant association between uric acid stones and excess body weight, high protein diets, and high fructose intake. In addition, low fluid intake can increase the chance of stone recurrence. Reduction of uric acid excretion, increased urinary volume, and alkalization of urine through medical management are effective in preventing stone recurrence. Dietary manipulation of protein and fluid intake as well as increased intake of fruit and vegetable and weight reduction may be of further benefit in the treatment of uric acid stones.
