Abstract

Ogyū Sorai formulated an original view of the history of the Classics. In his understanding, Confucius was the turning point: with him, the character of the Classics underwent a fundamental change. This view had enough destructive power to deconstruct the orthodox Neo-Confucian view of the Classics, which made use of the genealogical concept of the genealogy of the Way (道統 dōtō).

Notes

  1. 1.

“Great Learning” is the standard translation of Daxue . As Legge explains in the first footnote to his translation, it is a literal translation of the two characters, which he chose in order to sidestep Chinese discussions about the interpretation of the title. Sorai was one of those who subscribed to the interpretation of “school where the scions of the royal and aristocratic families studied after finishing primary school” 小学. Hence, in Sorai’s case, “National Academy” would be a suitable translation.
