Abstract
This chapter on technology and innovation will cover the types of tools and techniques that can be used to build upon, enhance, or create new simulation training tools or devices and how they are used. If it is found that a tool or product does not meet a specific training need, it is often the job of the healthcare simulation technology specialist (HSTS) to engineer and design a solution. It is important to remember that just because a commercial product exists, it does not mean that it will meet the needs for all learners or educators. Of course, even commercial products started as prototype designs to meet an unmet need. The chapter will conclude with a description of many common household and industrial supplies that have been previously used in simulation centers, a discussion of how to use them, and considerations for their incorporation into product design or daily use.
