Abstract
This chapter suggests that Celati’s use of comedy in Comiche (1971), which reproduces through language the effects of slapstick films, enables Celati to criticize the asylum. Through the employment of original literary strategies, the author lets aspects of the oppressive institution emerge. The chapter demonstrates how Celati was involved in the debate on mental health in the 1970s, with direct contact with one of the main protagonists of Italian radical psychiatry: Franco Basaglia. This contribution also argues that Comiche needs to be considered as Celati’s own contribution to the debate on mental health and thus read in the light of the wider criticism against oppressive institutions that characterizes all of his books of the 1970s.

Notes

See also Calvino (2008).

Celati read all these texts, as his essays in Finzioni occidentali confirm (Celati 2001a). Celati’s interest thus anticipates the translation and diffusion in Italy of most of these works. Wolfson is diagnosed with schizophrenia in his childhood and placed in a psychiatric hospital, where he undergoes violent treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy. His book is a tale of the refusal of his mother tongue and the development of a method of immediate translation of every sentence into a foreign language.
- 3.
In his letters to the Einaudi editorial board, Celati mentions authors such as Consolo, Morante, and Sciascia as the most representative of Einaudi’s publishing policy and the most opposite to his own idea of literature (Ronchi Stefanati 2017).
- 4.
The seminar focused mainly on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass, and Edward Lear’s Book of Nonsense.
