Abstract
Ankle arthritis is associated with debilitating discomfort and poor quality of life scores. Despite the expansion of total ankle replacement in the marketplace, arthrodesis remains a time-tested approach with high union rates and excellent pain relief when performed in the correct patient with appropriate technique. Arthroscopic and open anterior approaches are both viable methods of obtaining a reproducible, solid union. Modern fixation techniques such as anterior anatomic plating have improved fusion rates and thus improved outcomes.
