Abstract

The article focuses on a little-known piece of research On the Essence of Music and Russian Music written by composer and musicologist Mikhail Gnessin in 1915. The ideas expressed in this research have never been the subject of serious scientific discussion. Gnessin presents his views on the nature and content of music, examines concepts of “musical time” and “musical space”, “movement” in music, whilst also investigating the connection between the way a composer thinks and musical form, and finally, musical and “nonmusical” properties.
