Abstract
Throughout this textbook, we have explored the many reasons why medical professionals can and should join social media. We have discussed strategies for developing content, disseminating information, and engaging with a target audience. However, in addition to filling the void online with evidence-based information and interacting with patients and the general public, medical professionals can use social media in other ways. Academic institutions are beginning to recognize the importance of social media for their organizations and individual faculty members. Social media is being incorporated into traditional metrics for promotion and tenure. In addition, research surrounding social media has grown in recent years, both in understanding how it impacts patients and how it is being adopted by medical professionals. This final chapter will discuss additional ways medical professionals can utilize social media for career development.
It isn’t enough to think outside the box. Thinking is passive. Get used to acting outside the box.
