Abstract
This chapter narrates the story of Laura, an Iraqi newcomer Christian girl attending a Catholic high school in Canada. The chapter reveals how Lauraʼs hopefulness and family support helped her to overcome barriers and to achieve her academic dreams. Like any other newcomer student, Laura faced a number of challenges during her initial years in the Canadian school system yet her optimism helped her succeed in making friends, maintaining close relationships with family members, and developing a positive outlook about what the future holds for her. Laura’s story exemplifies the life of an Iraqi immigrant student in a Canadian school and sheds some light on the transformations that occur during such a studentʼs transitional journey. Laura is an example of a mature and wise young girl who is able to view her struggles in a different light after years of reflection.
