Part of the Critical and Applied Approaches in Sexuality, Gender and Identity book series (CAASGI)


This chapter outlines the broad themes of the book, specifically its focus on a critical developmental approach to affirming transgender young people and their families. The chapter outlines the problems inherent in the existing scientist-practitioner model in terms of cisgenderism, and differentiates the affirming approach adopted in the book from other such approaches to working with transgender young people and their families. The chapter concludes by outlining the GENDER mnemonic developed by the author, and how it can be applied to case formulation when working with transgender young people and their families.
