Abstract

This chapter is organized by fundamental diagnoses, primary operations, and operations in adulthood for complications owing to acquired or residual lesions. Surgeons who perform operations for patients with atrioventricular septal defects (AVSDs) in adulthood mostly do so for complications of the original operations, with the exception of the rare adult patient with an unoperated partial AVSD. The following sections review the primary operations for AVSD, which orient the surgeon to the various types of repairs that are likely to be encountered in later years when patients present with left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction, atrioventricular (AV) valve regurgitation or stenosis, residual ventricular septal defect (VSD), pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmias, and ventricular dysfunction.
