Abstract

This chapter surveys the state of business history in Chile, drawing attention to the relative lack of research on the topic compared with other Latin American countries until very recently. Explanations for this lie in the antagonism that many academics felt towards the business elite, due partly to the influence of dependency theories and the role that business leaders played in the military dictatorship of 1973–1990. However, recent changes in Chile and the growth of business history internationally have stimulated a change in attitude, and research is now flourishing. Chile provides a particularly interesting case for comparative business historians, with its dependence on exporting mineral products, its long history of diversified business groups normally based around an entrepreneurial family, their interaction with foreign investors and the state and their response to the inflation that characterised the country from the 1870s to the 1970s and to sudden economic shocks, especially in the 1930s, and 1970s/1980s. Moreover, since the return to democracy in 1990, Chile has given birth to a number of important multinational firms (the so-called multilatinas), which underlines the dynamism of Chilean business.
