Complications of Blepharoptosis Repair and Their Solutions

Abstract

When performed correctly, blepharoptosis correction can be one of the most rewarding procedures to the patient and to the surgeon. However, for the inexperienced surgeon and even the most experienced surgeon, it is a procedure fraught with potential for complications. Given that most ptosis surgeries are not technically difficult, complications are infrequently due to an intraoperative failure. Instead, the most common reason for complications is poor preoperative assessment of the patient. Without a thorough evaluation, an inappropriate surgical procedure may be selected for the patient such as performing a maximal levator resection when a frontalis sling was indicated or resecting only 6.5 mm of Muller’s muscle in a mullerectomy when 9.5 mm resection would have been preferred.
