Abstract

The range of methods used to value ecosystems is reviewed in this chapter. This includes a discussion of intrinsic value, ideas of natural capital and the approach to valuing Ecosystem Services adopted by the TEEB project. Muddiman then proceeds to critically assess how value is defined in mainstream economics and offers alternative viewpoints of the concept of value based upon other economic models. This includes an assessment of ecosystems as consumers of resources, as commodities and as a source of knowledge.
