Abstract

Muddiman presents a critical view of the current status of Ecosystem Services and its relationship to both Economics and Policy. This chapter looks at our level of knowledge in the fields of ecology and economics. By using the terms ‘biodiversity’ and ‘Gross Domestic Product’ as examples, Muddiman identifies the extent to which our practice of environmental and economic activities are based upon factual information and the degree to which ‘received wisdom’ and assumptions are used to form policy decisions. Muddiman then provides historical examples of how there is an inbuilt resistance to alternative views, and that increasing complication of existing ideas is frequently used before an idea is rejected for a new perspective.
