Abstract

There are several variations on the standard oral case presentation that can be used according to the clinical setting, the status of the patient, and the priorities and preferences of the care team. This chapter discusses specific approaches to night float and transfer presentations, SOAP-style presentations for work rounds, emergency room and outpatient clinic presentations, bedside presentations, and calls to consultants. Skills required for the various types of presentations include reassessment of initial clinical reasoning and decision-making, analysis of interval data, triage and identification of life-threatening problems, and production of a concise synopsis of a case. SNAPPS, a method for medical students to show their thinking and clinical reasoning in the outpatient clinic, is also discussed.
